Bushido has been the samurai code of conduct in Japan for several centuries. Bushido
was intended to help the samurai in mastering their nature and understanding their
minds and their universe. This was achieved through direct experience and through
fostering strenght, self-control and wisdom.
Bushido is based on seven esential principles, which are:
正義 Seigi: The right decision
and rectitude.
勇気 Yuki: Bravery and heroism.
仁 Jin: Compassion and benevolence
to all.
礼儀 Reigi: Courtesy and right
action.
誠 Makoto: Truthfulness and
sincerity.
名誉 Meiyo: Hounor and glory.
忠義 Chugi: Devotion and loyalty.
Martial spirit and courage are of course essential aspects of Bushido, but for the
samurai complete virtue in thought and action were the highest goals of Bushido.
Each samurai followed a carefully designed regimen of polite ceremony and etiquette
designed to promote such virtues. With its emphasis on prescribed form, Bushido
helped the samurai harmonize mind with body, enabling them to maintain a certain
calmness or heijoshin (literally an ordinary everday mindset), even in the face
of hardship.
Sincerity, kindness, honesty, filial piety and hounor all form part of the core
of Bushido, and they are the seed from which karate tradition grew. These attributes
and the wisdom, understanding and peaceful strenght they promote are some of the
greatest benefits to karate. They are also among Japan's greatest gifts to the world.
At the Bushido Dojo our aim is to pursue these principles through the practice of
Goju-Kai karate-do.
The Bushido Dojo is located in
Bloemfontein the capital city of the Free State.
Bloemfontein is located in the center of South Africa, about 1000 kilometers
north of Cape Town and 400 kilometers south of Johannesburg.
